What's in your pack?

From: (Bill@LetterboxingCentral.com) | Date: 2001-07-10 02:20:31 UTC
I'm learning fast - Sometimes there's something I forgot
to bring and sometimes I carry things around for no good reason.

I am going to add a piece to the Letterboxing Central Site as a
recommendation of what to carry with you on a letterbox hike.
I would like some input to share with anyone who is just starting
out or perhaps some good tips from the "old timers". My guess is
that there is a whole lot of good ideas out there.

I will publish a recomendations list at Letterboxing Central
and if LBNA likes, they are free to take the list and use it
in any way they see fit.I would be happy to supply it in
whatever form that can be used.

If you can contribute, please respond either on this list or
on the message board at LetterboxingCentral or directly by Email.
Thanks for the help and sage advice.

My kids and I carry:
In our letterboxing kit-
-a compass (more than one...we got really lost once when we left all the
compasses but one of my daughters in the van .... and it was more of a toy
than a tool! Fortunately we were in a beautiful place on a gorgeous spring
day.)
-stamp and ink pads
-log books
-pen/pencil
-my 9 yr old son brings a small mirror in case we get lost and need to signal
to the search planes and helicopters (he learned this in his hunters safety
course) and a thermal blanket that folds small enough to fit in his pants
pocket. :o)

In my backpack-
-extra ziplocks of assorted sizes
-sometimes another letterbox ready to go
-bug spray and sun screen, water
- handy mini first aid kit
- if we are combo letterbox/geocache hunting or "lettercaching" we bring a
ziplock full of stash to leave in the cache and a GPS in a ziplock. My
husband has politely warned me NOT to get his GPS wet...carrying it in a
ziplock has saved it a couple times when I went sliding down a muddy slope or
I "ssshhh-sshhh" let one of the kids carry it.
-for "lettercaching" we bring a stamp along to leave in the geocache as our
addition - turning it into a combo box and drumming up more interest in
letterboxing.
-if we are really on the ball... a camera.

I'm sure other, more seasoned letterboxers, have a more tested and tried kit.

Happy hunting,
:o)

A little flashlight to look into dark places can come in quite handy!

I always wear, or take, a bandana. They make great compression
bandages, slings, and keep the sweat from dribbling down inside your
shirt!

Also, a few waterproof matches, the untouchable bar of chocolate
(temptation!) and a pair of work gloves.

Is the pack heavy enough yet?

Regards,
Susan

What, night letterboxing?
This puts a whole new spin on the activity!

A commercial style weed wacker is real handy for those hard to find
boxes!

It's called starting the hunt an hour before dark and finishing after...... I didn't have a light and had to carry everything from the deep dark woods, 300 yards to an open field to be able to stamp in and see what I was doing....   Live and learn...

I find the Bushwacker 2000 with a 18" blade is just the ticket if you love
letterboxing but hate the thought of plants and bushes actually touching any
part of your body. My back pack is actually a surplus Desert Storm flame
thrower used when the Bushwacker 2000 would be considered in bad taste.
These gems are light and have plenty of room for compass, stamp pads, book,
magnesium flares, first aid kit, smoke grenades, sun screen and the
Bushwacker 2000! Not only will this puppy turn a 3 inch thick tree into a
giant charcoal stick with a short burst of intense flame but you can warm
food and use it to light your way home if caught in the dark. And before you
tree hugging spotted owl nuts get all in a huff, we always toss a hand full
of pebbles in to the brush to scare out the critters before firing up the
torch!

I look - I burn - I find!

Bill,

Night letterboxing is not all that new, I have been
doing it ever since I started letterboxing. And
besides isn't that what the little bio-luminescent
spots are for on your compass?

Naaaah, cowpost. They just want us to stay in our little county parks, so
they can go into the woods at night and play with the bears...

There were a lot of posts last summer on what to carry when
letterboxing. The Jolly G Man had written about using a mini mag
light. Someone else talked about a head lamp.

One of the "military" things I have learned over the years - doing
first aid in the dark - is that a mini mag can be used hands free if
you put several wraps of electrical tape around the butt of the
light. This allows you to hold it reasonably comfortably in your
teeth for a couple minutes when you are doing something with both
hands.

It is not as good as a head lamp, but it is almost as good for quick
tasks like stamping up or putting a tent together.
